Ben’s In the News
Ben's Kosher Delicatessen Restaurant & Caterers hosted a very special event for the families and loved ones of the Holocaust survivors on Christmas Day.
Nearly 100 guests hailing from Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennslyvania, and the New York-metropolitan area – as well as group founder, Gloria Weicher, who traveled from Montreal, Quebec, Canada – filled the dining area of Ben's Manhattan location from 1pm to 4pm for the Children of Holocaust Survivors Support Group's first meeting.
The group had a selection of traditional kosher fare, including favorites, such as knishes, latkes, and pastrami sandwiches. Once the meals were served, guests shared their unique experiences of growing up with family members who survived the Holocaust. Fellow survivor groups, meeting in Chicago and Ben's Boca Raton location, also joined in via Skype.
"It began with two members saying let's do lunch," said Andrea Bolender, board member of the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center and survivor group member. "It grew to a crowd of close of 100 wanting to have this event."
"We found a safe haven amongst others like ourselves. We understood each other's upbringing, and we had no agenda other than to be joyful that our parents survived, had us, and we were together with our shared backgrounds," said Donna Steinhorn, the organizer of the event. "Ben's was delightful in bending over backwards to make our event a success, and David Czegledi made it so easy for us, working with us all the way."
"Events like this remind us all that we have so much to be thankful for," said David Czegledi, Assistant General Manager, Ben's Kosher Delicatessen Restaurant & Caterers. "Being able to help the community by hosting this event is an honor."
On Monday, December 15, 2014, Ben's Manhattan participated in the 6th Annual Latke Festival, which took place at the Metropolitan Pavilion in support of The Sylvia Center. The mission of The Sylvia Center is to inspire young people and their families to establish independent healthy eating habits—so that they may lead healthy and productive lives.
