Ben's Delicatessen Owner Reflects On 40 Years

(Long Island, NY) In 1972, Ronnie Dragoon returned to his native Long Island from Indiana to open a delicatessen in Baldwin Harbor. He called it Ben's Kosher Delicatessen Restaurant, which he named after his father. Forty years later, the restaurant has expanded with six locations: three in Nassau County, one in Queens, one in Manhattan and one in Florida. Great Balls of Matzah: Local Matzah Ball Contest Heats Up The Kitchen

In anticipation of the Jewish holiday Passover, Forest Trace, theLauderhill resort retirement community, hosted the third annual "Golden Matzah Bowl," a three-part competition, featuring eight South Florida restaurateurs as well as the "Best Matzah Ball Mix from the Box" and "Best Homemade Recipe" contests. Participation in the contest was free, though all attendees were asked to donate a box of matzah ball mix to WECARE, the Broward food pantry. READ MORE...

Every day through the entirety of 2012, Ben's will offer a different special that is dedicated to the theme of either "1972" or "40 years." Recent deals have included a potato pudding sampler for 40 cents, and a "buy one, get one free" opportunity for those born in 1972.

First Impression: The big and busy, South Florida-style Jewish deli -- once epitomized by the now-closed Wolfie Cohen's Rascal House in Sunny Isles Beach -- has been replaced with Ben's New York Kosher Delicatessen. Arrive at about 6 p.m., and you'll stand in line, despite the 242-seat dining room.
