Former Rep. Steve Israel, Ben’s Deli & United Way Launch “Chicken Soup For Healthcare Responders”

March 22, 2020

Former Rep. Steve Israel, Ben’s Deli and United Way of Long Island have announced a partnership to provide food to medical professionals in hospitals called “Chicken Soup for Health Care Responders”.

The idea occurred to Israel during his self quarantine, over a take out meal from Ben’s Deli. A family member, who is a doctor, told him that some hospital staff responding to the coronavirus were experiencing food shortages. Israel contacted Ben’s Deli owner Ronnie Dragoon and United Way of Long Island President and CEO Theresa Regnante, and they collaborated on “Chicken Soup for Health Care Responders”.

Here’s how it will work:

United Way has set up a unique CHICKEN SOUP FOR HEALTH CARE RESPONDERS link on their website, www.unitedwayli.org/givechickensoup. Donors can contribute any amount.

The funds will be used to pay for cold cut sandwiches, hot dogs, knishes and soups. The food will be packaged to avoid contamination. Ben’s will discount the food and waive its delivery fee.

Ben’s will deliver the food to hospitals in Nassau and Suffolk.

Rep. Israel said: “We know that there are critical shortages of personal protective equipment for medical professionals. Making sure they have food during their long shifts is easy to solve and we can do it right away. Chicken Soup for Health Care Responders will help achieve that goal. I’m so grateful to Ben’s Deli and United Way for being so responsive.”

Ronnie Dragoon said: “In these troubling times, helping to keep our health care first responders nourished is something we can do now. Todd Silverstein, Ben’s Vice President, will coordinate all deliveries to Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Todd can be reached at 516.621.3340 or on his cell phone, 516.769.7561.”

Theresa Regnante said: “The health care community is pivotal in this crisis and United Way of Long Island is honored to support former Congressman Israel’s plan to help the workforce.  This partnership is true to our mission, as it focuses on the health and welfare of Long Islanders.”

On September 25, Ronnie Dragoon, Founder-Owner, Ben’s Kosher Delicatessen Restaurant & Caterers, presented a check to Jean Kelly, Executive Director/CEO, and Rob Kammerer, Board Member, The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network), in the amount of $2,400 at the Mary Brennan INN soup kitchen in Hempstead.

The money was raised from a promotion during National Deli Month. From August 1-31, Ben’s offered its customers a prix fixe menu special, with a portion of the sales proceeds going to benefit the Mary Brennan INN.

The INN is a not-for-profit, volunteer-based organization that provides a broad variety of essential services to assist those facing hunger, homelessness and extreme poverty. Ben’s Celebrates National Delicatessen Month

In celebration of National Delicatessen Month, Ben’s Kosher Delicatessen Restaurant & Caterers will offer a two-course, prix fixe menu with traditional Jewish fare during the month of August. The Deli Lover’s Favorite special will feature Matzoh Ball Soup, Hot Open Pastrami and Corned Beef Combo, served with stuffed derma (kishke) and fresh-cut French fries. Accompanied by our fresh-cut Cole Slaw and Barrel Cured Pickles, all for the low price of $25.99! Extra-lean meats are available for an additional $1.00.

With the company’s “Dine Out at Ben’s” option, patrons can completely relax and let Ben’s provide the ultimate “holiday without the headache” experience. On Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 22, seatings are available for 1:00, 2:30, and 5:00 p.m. in all locations (7:15 p.m. seating is available at Woodbury, Carle Place, Greenvale, Bayside, and Boca Raton). A prix fixe ($9.99) “Children’s Turkey Feast,” which includes turkey, stuffing, a choice of two sides, dessert and fountain beverage, is available for children ages 12 and under. Large parties are welcome, though reservations are encouraged to guarantee seating. To ensure there is a little something for everyone, some locations will also be showing the football games, and drinks and desserts can be purchased at an additional cost.

For those hoping to host the party but prefer not to cook, there is also the “Ben’s Thanksgiving Feast” catering option (for a price of $249.90) which includes one whole roasted turkey (15-pound average), Ben’s homemade stuffing and gravy, and a choice of two select sides. As a bonus, all Ben’s Friends Rewards members who order a catered feast ordered by Monday, November 19 will receive two bonus BUY-1-GET-1-FREE meal coupons (up to $50 value).

“Our guests are our family and there’s no other way we’d spend the holidays than by accommodating our guests for whom we are thankful,” says Ben’s Owner and Founder, Ronnie Dragoon. “We want them to be able to focus on spending time with their loved ones, rather than how much longer the turkey should be kept in the oven.”

For those simply looking to complement their Thanksgiving Feast, whether it’s all from Ben’s or primarily crafted at home — or are hoping to bring a dish as a guest — Ben’s also offers a variety of appetizers, sides, and desserts. Phone-in orders are welcome and Ben’s takeout counter is open all day on Thanksgiving for any last-minute needs, be it a quart of gravy or an extra tray of stuffing, among other items.
